Maurie’s Story - I Wish I Lived In An Island
July 3rd, 2007 by JennyMaurie Enright was three-and-a-half years old when he lost his right eye in an accident with a piece of tin while he was playing. From then on, everything was against him: his father died not long afterwards, the family lived in poor conditions, and Maurie had to go to school wearing a pink eye patch for years. Constantly teased by the other kids, Maurie spent his lunch hours alone under the school building, hating everyone and everything.
And then a diligent social worker discovered Alec Powell, Perth’s first ocularist, a man who inspired Maurie to turn his life around and give to those less fortunate than the rest.
Maurie’s story is heart-warming and inspirational. Grab a tea or coffee - because it’s quite long - and settle back for a truly rewarding read.
